Promoting fairness in the construction industry

Friday, November 28, 2014

Meg Munn MP recently met Chrissi McCarthy, Managing Director of Constructing Equality Limited, who devised the ‘Be Fair’ framework for the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB). Chrissi has a background in the construction industry and understands the complex pressures and structures that can make it difficult to introduce fair working practices.

The Be Fair framework provides a structured approach to business which helps companies develop Fairness, Inclusion and Respect ensuring that the business thrives. It supports the creation of a workplace where employees feel valued and supported, which helps increase productivity through improved staff engagement and loyalty, reduce costs associated with staff turnover and reduce the likelihood of the skills you’ve invested in moving to a competitor. It can also be important as a means to demonstrate how a company values employees who produce a high standard of work, a prerequisite for winning some contracts.

Chrissi believes that it is important to improve the working arrangements in construction to ensure that more women join the industry and will want to stay. She believes that the framework built around the values of fairness, inclusion and respect could be applicable to other industries too.

Meg said:

"I was pleased to meet Chrissi and hear about her work. It is good to see the CITB promoting a framework that seeks to value employees whatever their background.

I have no doubt that companies who adopt this approach will see greater productivity and staff loyalty benefiting the business as well as the staff."
