Safeguarding Children

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

Meg Munn MP and Emma Lewell-Buck MP, the co-chairs of the Child Protection All-Party Parliamentary Group recently met a group of professionals concerned about child protection.  The group known as the “Safer Safeguarding Group” comprises professionals from a variety of backgrounds including, social work, social care management, medicine and civil aviation.

They wish to introduce various safety style approaches well established in civil aviation and being increasingly adopted in medicine. In particular they advocated initiatives described as: confidential near miss reporting; human factors training; and encouragement and support for whistle-blowers drawing attention to safety failings.

Serious Case Reviews reveal time and time again the basic failure in communication and not listening to children. The most effective way of improving child protection is by learning from mistakes routinely made. In order to do so a culture must be developed in which people are not just allowed to talk about errors and failings, and to learn from them, but are positively encouraged and rewarded for doing so. They believe that without open, honest frank and widespread discussion of how things go wrong, they will never be put right?

Meg and Emma recognised that some of the approaches were already in place but others needed to be set out in greater detail to see their merits. It was therefore agreed that the group would submit a fully argued paper for further consideration.
