Tackling family dysfunction

Wednesday, January 21, 2015

As Chair of the Child Protection All-Party Parliamentary Group Meg Munn MP met George Hosking, Chief Executive Officer of the WAVE Trust. The trust works to break cycles of family dysfunction and child maltreatment by finding solutions to the root causes of damage. Their 70 / 30 campaign is seeking to reduce child maltreatment in the UK by at least 70% by 2030.

George outlined their plans for pilot projects organised with local services in a number of areas focusing on key causes of child maltreatment. These include a failure of bonding between parents and their baby, parents who have experienced abuse as children, mental health and addiction problems. These projects will involve professionals assisting parents to overcome these issues.

Meg said:

“I welcome this approach seeking to tackle this very important issue. For families the birth of a baby brings many challenges and providing the right help and support early in life can make a real difference. I support Wave’s aim to see this approach developed more widely building on the experience of the proposed pilot projects.”
