Labour provides free nursery places

Wednesday, March 31, 2004

Sheffield MP Meg Munn welcomed the announcement from Children’s Minister Margaret Hodge that from today every 3 and 4 year old will be entitled to free part-time nursery education.

Meg (who is also Margaret Hodge’s Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS)) said:

“I’m proud that this Labour Government is transforming the support available to families to make sure every child gets a sure start in life. In 1997 there was no entitlement to free nursery education for 3 and 4 year olds and no national childcare strategy. Now we have childcare places for well over 1.4 million children and by 2006 for over 2 million children.

“This Labour Government is committed to helping children and their families by providing good quality and affordable childcare, early education and family support. From today every 3 and 4 year old can access free part-time nursery care, this will make a real difference not only for parents today but also for these children in the future.”

The entitlement is for two and a half hours per day for three terms (33 weeks).  All children will receive this entitlement from the beginning of the term following their third birthday.   Parents can chose to take up a free place for their child at a range of maintained, voluntary and independent settings including maintained nursery schools and classes, independent schools, private day nurseries, pre-schools, playgroups and registered childminder networks
