Silent Night - Fireworks to have curfew

Wednesday, April 28, 2004

Meg Munn MP welcomed new Home Office proposals to introduce penalties for those who use fireworks antisocially.  Meg said, “We all enjoy fireworks when they are used in the appropriate setting, but the few anti social types who set them off in the early hours can cause distress to people and pets and spoil the fun”

The proposals would crack down on the anti-social use of fireworks and be in place for this year’s firework season. Among the measures suggested is a curfew, banning the use of fireworks between 11pm and 7 am, except on celebration days such as New Years Eve.  There will also be a noise limit on fireworks sold, and a review of licences to shops selling fireworks.

It is planned that the police, trading standards and local authorities would be responsible for enforcing the new regulations. People who break the curfew could receive fines of up to £5,000 or six months imprisonment.
