Fostering Care Fortnight

Wednesday, May 12, 2004

Meg Munn MP attended an event at the House of Commons, hosted by the Fostering Network, to launch “Fostering Care Fortnight.”  The aim for the fortnight is to encourage more people to become foster families, so that children who are being fostered can be looked after locally.

More than 50,000 children and young people are living with foster families in Britain.  To be able to provide these vulnerable children with the highest standard of care the Fostering Network estimates that at least 7,800 more foster families are needed in the UK.

Meg says, “As a former social worker I know what an important role foster families play in looking after children who are in care.  It is a very effective way of caring for children who cannot live with their own families.  There is a shortage of foster homes and I would urge any families who feel that they might be able to help these children, to contact Social Services.”

Meg is pictured here with David Hadjicostas, chair of Fostering Network, who has been a foster carer for 10 years.
