Meg Supports the Campaign to Stamp out Attacks on Shopworkers

Monday, July 12, 2004

Local MP Meg Munn gave her whole-hearted support to the National Respect for

Shopworkers Week that highlights the growing problem of abuse against staff and customers of the retail industry.

Whilst visiting the Co-operative store on Constable Road in Heeley Meg said:

“Despite the improvements in security through the use of cameras too many people still cause problems for local shops which provide such a valuable service. I hope this campaign will make more people think seriously about the need for respect for their local shop workers.”

National Respect for Shopworkers Week, which ran from 5th - 11th July, is part of the ‘Freedom From Fear’ campaign organised by the USDAW union that emphasizes the problem of physical, mental and verbal abuse faced by Shopworkers and their customers.

Supplementary information:

?        Since 1995 more than 1 million Shopworkers have been attacked, threatened or verbally abused. On average, in the UK, 1 shopworker is abused every minute.

?        Threats of violence have been reported in 72% of retail stores. 47% of staff reported physical attacks or assaults in a 12 month period.

?        USDAW’s ‘Freedom from Fear’ campaign was launched in October 2002.

?        Support for the campaign has come from Prime Minister Tony Blair, Tesco, Sainsburys and the Co-op.
