MEG MUNN MP CALLS FOR MORE HELP TO SURVIVORS OF MALE SEXUAL ABUSE

Thursday, July 15, 2004

Sheffield Heeley MP, Meg Munn, met with representatives of Survivors UK in the House of Commons to add her voice to the campaign for better awareness of male sexual abuse.

Founded in 1986, Survivors UK is the only dedicated national support service for male survivors of sexual abuse. Whilst meeting representatives of the charity, Meg said:   "The men who have suffered sexual abuse need our understanding and help, not to be left all alone without support. This is an area that has stayed in the shadows for to long".

Greater awareness and understanding of male sexual abuse is vital in Sheffield where according to Public Health figures 8-16% of the Male population have been affected and 60% of Community Health Workers have identified the need for further training.

Supplementary Information:

?        3% of the adult male population has suffered non-consensual sexual experiences.

?        50% of sexually abused males have problems with substance misuse.

?        Since 1995, only 0.4% of rapes have been reported to the police.

?        Survivors UK offer facilitated support groups, face to face counseling services and a Survivors UK National Helpline - 0845 122 1201.
