Licensing Act - the deadline draws near

Tuesday, June 28, 2005

The deadline for All organisations that currently sell alcohol to convert their licenses through their ‘grandfather rights’ is drawing near. The Licensing Act 2003 will be enforced from 24th November this year, with the deadline for applications to convert being 6th August. After this date all premises who have not converted will have to apply for a new licence, which carries the risk that a licence may not be granted.

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn said;

‘I urge all licensed premises to ensure they comply with the new licensing arrangements. The new laws not only apply to pubs and bars but to sports clubs, village halls, off-licences and restaurants. The changes have been widely publicised so there is no excuse for not taking this opportunity to convert rather than apply for a new licence.’

Licences will not be automatically converted and it is the responsibility of the licensee of the establishment to apply. For more information see the Department for Culture, Media and Sports website www.culture.gov.uk or the Sheffield City Councils website www.sheffield.gov.uk.
