Calling for a Smoke Free Environment

Thursday, July 14, 2005

Ireland, New York and Liverpool have banned or are attempting to ban smoking in public places and it looks like the UK will do the same. The debate comes to Sheffield this week as delegates including Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn are to attend the ‘Smoke Free Sheffield’ event on the 15th July at the Royal Victoria Hotel. The campaign hopes to encourage people voluntarily not to smoke in public places and encourage businesses to ban smoking on their premises.

Commenting on the campaign Meg said,

I can remember when smoking was common on public transport, on planes, in most offices and in cinemas. I think most of us would agree that all of these places are better today, now they’re smoke-free. I think these important changes will make Sheffield Heeley healthier and reduce the risks of disease for local workers and that is why I have signed up to having a smoke free working environment and I fully support this campaign.’

The government is proposing that by 2008;

?      All restaurants will be smoke-free;

?      All pubs and bars preparing and serving food will be smoke-free;

?      Bar areas will be smoke-free in every, pub, but some pubs that don’t serve food will have smoking areas.

?      All other enclosed public places and workplaces will be smoke-free;

?      Members of clubs will be allowed to choose if their club goes smokefree.
