Record investment for improving school buildings

Thursday, October 13, 2005

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn has heralded the announcement that local schools are to benefit from a multi-million pound funding boost as 'a huge step forward for schools in Sheffield Heeley’.

The government today confirmed that Sheffield Heeley will benefit from the £89 million of funding available to the Yorkshire and Humber region to improve and create new local schools. For the period 2007-08 money invested will rise to a record £6.3 billion nationwide compared to £683 million in 1996-97.

Meg said;

"This money will help local schools with pressing needs to improve facilities for pupils. I believe that every child, regardless of their background, deserves the best education and school facilities. This increase in investment will help continue the work already underway in Heeley constituency which is raising the quality of our school buildings.”

The new funding will be added to the funds Local Education Authorities use to meet their most immediate local building needs;  they can bid for projects which may include new primary and secondary schools, new sports halls, special educational needs provision and extended school facilities.
