Daniel Hindle’s legacy
Wednesday, November 09, 2005
Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn is hoping this week’s inquest into the tragic death of constituent Daniel Hindle, who died at the age of 17 after getting his lip pierced, will raise awareness of the dangers of body piercing.
Meg said;
“Daniel died tragically in December 2002 and since that time his mum, Christina, has been working tirelessly to raise awareness amongst young people of the dangers of body piercing.”
“In 2003 I successfully campaigned for a change in the law which means that local authorities can now regulate body piercing businesses to ensure they keep to strict hygiene standards and follow appropriate procedures. I am calling on all local authorities to use the powers they have and do what they can to avoid another tragedy.”
Following pressure by Meg the Department of Health agreed to carry out a study into the health risks of body piercing for people with existing heart problems, like Daniel’s. The study may provide further evidence that tougher legislation is needed to ensure that people carrying out body piercing are properly trained and have a recognised qualification.
