Civil Partnerships in Brighton

Wednesday, December 21, 2005

At the first Civil Partnership ceremonies held in Brighton, Meg gave the following short remarks.

This morning I am full of admiration. Admiration for those who campaigned for civil partnerships and have today seen it become a reality, admiration for Brighton registry office and the magnificent arrangements for this moment of legal history - but mostly admiration for the three couples and their families and friends. That anybody could be up and ready to form a partnership at 8 am in the morning is a great achievement. My marriage took place considerably later in the day.

I am proud to be part of a party and a Government which has social justice and equality at the heart of its values. The measures we have taken, include abolishing Section 28, equalising the age of consent, outlawing discrimination in employment and now today civil partnership, are another step along the road to equality for gay and lesbian people.

It is one of the joys of life to be able to declare your love and commitment to your partner in front of your family and friends. In bringing in civil partnerships we are giving legal recognition to relationships which have remained invisible in the eyes of the law. Around the country I have met people intending to register their partnerships who have been together for 20, 30, even 40 years. Loving committed relationships. It is right that we should give people in same sex relationships the same rights and responsibilities as married couples.

So to the three couples who are about to register their partnerships I wish you all the best for the future, and hope that you will always be as happy as you are today.
