Promoting Sex Equality: introducing the Gender Duty

Monday, February 13, 2006

Speaking at a fringe meeting at the Labour Party’s spring conference, Meg Munn, Minister for Women & Equality, spoke about the new gender duty being introduced in the Equality Bill. The Bill, due to become law in 2006, includes a duty on public bodies to eliminate discrimination and promote gender equality.

The duty will require them to demonstrate, proactively, that both their employment practices, and their policies and services, treat men and women fairly and take into account their different needs. The duty is an opportunity to radically improve the delivery of public services in the UK. It is the biggest change to gender equality legislation in 30 years.

The Equality Bill will establish the Commission for Equality and Human Rights, introduce a duty on public bodies to eliminate unlawful discrimination and to promote equality of opportunity for women and men, and will also extend protection in goods facilities and services on grounds of religion or belief.

Other speakers at the fringe meeting were Jenny Watson (Chair of the EOC) and Gloria Mills (President of the TUC) with Diana Holland (TGWU) as Chair.
