Kuwaiti women and politics

Thursday, May 25, 2006

Meg met Dr Masouma Al-Mubarak, Kuwaiti Minister of Planning and Minister of State for Administrative Development Affairs, in the House of Commons on Wednesday 24th May. They discussed various topics, including the role of women in Kuwaiti political affairs.

Dr Al-Mubarak told Meg that the women of Kuwait had been struggling for political rights for around 35 years, which had been granted in May 2005. The Kuwaiti elections on the 29 June 2006 would be the first election in which women will be participating.

She said that women taking part in politics is much more than simply winning elections or nominating women candidates. The involvement of women in Kuwaiti politics is of huge symbolic importance in advancing women’s political rights in the Arab world.

Kuwaiti women currently hold prominent positions, and the appointment of the first female Cabinet minister in June 2005, and the two female members in the Municipal Council, have been a real breakthrough in the struggle for gender integration in politics and public life.
