Conference on Equality between Women and Men

Monday, June 12, 2006

Meg Munn, Minister for Women and Equality, attended the 6th European ‘Ministerial Conference on Equality between Women and Men’ in Stockholm on 8-9 June 2006. She attended the plenary and introduced the paper produced by the UK Government for the conference. In addition, Meg had a number of meetings with Ministers and officials from other countries during the two days.

The objective of the conference was to raise awareness that the lack of gender equality brings with it personal, social and economic costs, and that these costs are higher than those incurred in implementing gender equality. Also that there are social and economic benefits to be gained from gender equality.

The conference highlighted problems and obstacles faced when introducing a gender perspective in all policies, as well as results already obtained. Speakers emphasised the need to use the gender mainstreaming strategy in all policies. If decisions are taken without integrating a gender perspective, the results are not likely to be viable or lasting.
