Wider Horizons Celebration

Thursday, July 13, 2006

Meg attended the Wider Horizons Celebration event held at Sheffield Hallam University recently to congratulate students who have been involved in the project and present them with certificates. The project was developed at Sheffield Hallam to encourage girls to consider careers in Science, Engineering, Technology and Built Environment. 18 schoolgirls from 4 schools in South Yorkshire attended, and some of the employers who participated. Head teachers and the Connexions Personal Advisers from the 4 schools also attended.

The Women and Work Commission report, Shaping a Fairer Future, highlighted improved work experience options as a means of increasing women’s participation in the science, engineering and technology sectors. The Wider Horizons programme was introduced to encourage girls who had picked clerical/admin jobs for work experience to investigate some alternative careers whilst on placement by placing them in science, engineering, technology and building and construction companies.

During the 2/3 weeks work experience the students undertook their selected type of work and some additional activities.  They were provided with a workbook, which they have used to research the organisation they are placed in, the people who work there and some non-traditional careers. The students also put together a PowerPoint presentation to present to each other, and their work experience co-ordinator, on return from the placement.

Some of the female role models the girls have shadowed include:  surveyors, architects, engineers (structural, electrical, mechanical, production, process, building services etc), metallurgists, environmental specialists, health & safety officers, pathology lab technicians, tenant liaison officers and women in construction trades.
