‘Preventing Extremism’ - visit to Burnley

Thursday, August 24, 2006

Communities Minister Meg Munn and her fellow Minister Phil Woolas visited Burnley recently as part of a tour of towns and cities under the title ‘Preventing Extremism Together’. These visits keep a promise made last year when following the 7 July bombings Ministers Hazel Blears and Paul Goggins visited to discuss with local people what steps should be taken to prevent young people becoming involved in extremist ideological groups. The Ministers promised to return in a year’s time to discuss progress made on recommendations for action, but since then a re-organisation within Government has placed responsibility for this with the Department for Communities and Local Government.

Meg said:

"A wide range of people from the local area came to the meeting. In the light of the alleged plot brought to light two weeks ago, we obviously discussed just why young people turn to extremists groups. The views we heard will be considered along with those from visits to other towns and cities, and will help Government and local communities continue to work to tackle this important issue."
