Trade Justice Movement lobbies Parliament

Friday, June 21, 2002

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative Party MP for Sheffield Heeley met many Sheffield representatives of the Trade Justice Movement during a mass lobby of Parliament on Wednesday 19th June.

The lobby was organised by the 38 organisations of the Trade Justice Movement, including CAFOD, Friends of the Earth, Christian Aid, Oxfam and World Development Movement.

The Trade Justice Movement, who are worried about conditions in the third world and developing countries, asked MPs to consider

a new approach to food and farming to protect poor farmers’ livelihoods and the environment;

reconsideration of plans to liberalise vital services, such as water; and

new global laws to regulate the activities of international corporations.

Speaking after the lobby, Meg Munn said

"Trade has a vital role to play in helping developing countries to reduce poverty. According to the World Bank, substantial trade liberalisation could lift an additional 300 million people out of poverty by 2015.

I know that like me, the Government welcomes the efforts of those involved in this lobby to raise awareness of the need to make globalisation work for the poor. I hope they will also take their messages to other governments who have yet to take action in support of free and fair trade."
