Equality Commission for Northern Ireland

Thursday, November 23, 2006

Meg recently visited the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland in Belfast where she met with the senior management team and also a number of Commissioners. Northern Ireland is ahead of the rest of the UK in having had a single equality commission since 1999. The Commission for Equality and Human Rights (CEHR) will open its doors in October next year and cover Scotland, England and Wales.

Meg said:

"It was really useful to learn how they have structured their organisation to provide similar services to those that the new CEHR will provide from next year. The Commissioners told me that not only did they think it was possible for one body to cover all areas of equality, but that coming together has provided a much stronger focus on equality. It also helped businesses ensure they treated all their employees fairly. Public sector organisations have also been helped to ensure that their services meet the needs of all sections of the community."
