Remembering the Slave Trade

Tuesday, December 5, 2006

A group of young people from Hull, London, Liverpool and Bristol visited Westminster at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott MP. All these areas had strong connections with the Atlantic slave trade and they were in London to find out more about the past. Next year will be the bi-centenary commemoration of the abolition of the slave trade.

After a visit to Greenwich's Maritime Museum, the young people attended a question time event chaired by Meg. Also involved were leaders of organisations who work with young people to tackle discrimination that black people experience today.

Meg said:

"The young people had clearly found the visit very interesting. They were shocked to learn about the brutality of the slave trade, and wanted to know why this part of history isn't given more prominence. They also wanted to ensure that the commemoration next year of the abolition of slavery helps to educate people about what happened."
