Walter Addy, local hero, and Meg

Friday, June 28, 2002

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative MP for Sheffield Heeley joined The Experience Corps this week to honour a local hero from Sheffield at a national award ceremony in Westminster, London.

The event was designed to highlight the work done by older volunteers across the country. MPs were asked to nominate someone who has shown real commitment to their community and Meg had no hesitation in selecting Walter Addy from Norfolk Park in Sheffield.

Walt accompanied by his proud family, wife Mary, daughter Julie and grandson Joe, was presented with a certificate of merit at a ceremony in Westminster Hall.

Speaking after the event Meg Munn said

"Baroness Betty Boothroyd addressed the local heroes, telling them she could see that volunteering kept them young. Walt, who gives at least 40 hours a week to his local community is a pensioner himself at 74, so there certainly seems to be something in that argument. Walt is a wonderful local asset, particularly to the elderly people of Norfolk Park and I know that they will be joining with me today in thanking him for all that he does on their behalf."
