‘Amazing Grace’ Parliamentary screening

Thursday, March 22, 2007

Meg attended a special screening in Parliament of the new film ‘Amazing Grace’. The film depicts the struggle of the anti-slavery abolitionists as they attempted to prohibit the trading of human beings for profit. Their Parliamentary leader was William Wilberforce, a Hull MP. They eventually succeeded in banning the trading of slaves within the British Empire in 1807.

The photo shows Alan Johnson - MP for Hull West and Hessle, Ken Wales - producer of the film, William Hague - Yorkshire MP and author of a Wilberforce biography, Meg and Lord Hastings of Scarisbrick - who organised the screening.

A number of events commemorating the Act of 1807 are happening around the country see: www.direct.gov.uk/slavery
