Slavery Debate in Lambeth

Sunday, April 29, 2007

Meg recently took part in a debate on the abolition of the slave trade, which was held in Lambeth Town Hall, London. The debate was chaired by Colin Prescod of the Institute of Race Relations, and other speakers included Richard Reddie of Set All Free, Naa Akofor Amorduro II - a Ghanaian warrior queen, Aidan McQuaid of Anti-Slavery International and Lee Jasper, an advisor to the Mayor of London.

The debate gave an opportunity to explore the full story of both the slave trade, and the resistance and action that led to its abolition. The relevance of so-called ‘legacy issues’ was also debated, including poverty in Africa today; unequal treatment and discrimination in the UK, and modern day slavery and human trafficking.
