Ludlam House residents fight for a bus shelter

Tuesday, July 16, 2002

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative MP for Sheffield Heeley has been fighting for a better deal for residents of Ludlam House on Berners Road, Arbourthorne.

Mrs Carol Cobb and a neighbour came to one of Meg’s advice surgeries in June to see if she would help them get a shelter for their local bus stop.

After hearing their story Meg wrote to the South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive, supporting the residents saying

"You may not be aware of the geography of this particular area but I can assure you that it is a stop that cries out for a bus shelter. The stop is at one of the highest points in Sheffield with nowhere at all to shelter from wind and rain. Many of the passengers who use the three different routes that stop there are elderly. Ludlam House, where Mrs. Cobb lives is sheltered accommodation and there are also many other elderly residents in the area. I am sure that you can understand that local residents would like to see a bus shelter in place before the onset of another winter. Passengers alighting from buses in bad weather have nowhere even to put up an umbrella as the wind makes it nearly impossible."

David Hurst, the SYPTE Infrastructure Co-ordinator wrote back agreeing to put the suggestion to Sheffield City Council but anticipating that a shelter would be provided before April 2003.

Carol Cobb and her neighbours from Ludlam House, are delighted with the news and hope to be consulted about the type of shelter they might get, all hope that it will be in place before the autumn.
