Launch of Aik Awaaz (One Voice)

Friday, July 20, 2007

Meg Munn MP was guest of honour at the launch of Aik Awaaz (one voice) - Northern Asian Women’s Forum; which took place at Sheffield Town Hall today.  The forum is being coordinated by Roshni Sheffield Asian Women’s Resource Centre based on London Road, Sheffield. The launch brings together key women’s organisations from around the country to highlight key issues facing abused women with insecure immigration status.

Women who suffer from domestic violence and have no recourse to public funds are one of a number of groups in difficult circumstances. These groups may be in vulnerable circumstances and the Home Office have urged local authorities to take these into consideration when assessing their eligibility for social care.

Meg said:

‘Domestic violence is a serious problem and the statistics make grim reading: one in four women will experience domestic violence during their life time and 175 of violent crime is domestic violence related. Groups and organisations, like those who have come together today, play an important role assisting some of the most vulnerable people in our communities and do it exceptionally well - I thank them for inviting me to speak.’

Ghazala Razzaq, Centre Coordinator of Roshni states “The ruling is having a devastating impact on the lives of many minority women who are coming to the country as wives and who are then being subject to domestic violence from husbands and families. This forces women into positions of economic dependency with a stark choice, of leaving and facing destitution or staying and risking their lives. The government have done a lot to address domestic violence and support victims; but we urge the government to do more for abused women who have insecure status and provide better protection to these women”.
