More investment for Children

Saturday, August 4, 2007

Children, parents and families in Sheffield Heeley will benefit from a funding boost for Sure Start Children’s Centres, early years and childcare, according to local MP Meg Munn.

The Government has announced that Sheffield will receive more than 45 million over the next three years for early years and childcare, including 22 million to expand the number of Children’s Centres.

Meg said:

“The early years of a child’s life are crucial to their development and future prospects. That’s why the Government is investing to improve children’s early year’s services.

The Sure Start Children’s Centres already in my constituency bring significant benefits for families. Much is due to the hard work and dedication of staff and volunteers at the centres. They provide support and advice about childcare, information about a child’s early years and the education and health services. This sustained help has increased the levels of babies who breastfeed, and the reading and learning skills of older children.

We can now make even more progress with the possibility of a Children’s Centre in every community by 2010. In addition we can have extra outreach workers to reach the most disadvantaged children.”

The money will go towards:

o        Providing a Sure Start Children’s Centre in every community

o        Outreach work to reach the most disadvantaged families

o        Training and support for the early years workforce

o        Ensuring there are sufficient childcare places in each Local Authority

o        Ensuring every nursery and Children’s Centre has a graduate to lead children’s learning and development.
