The Local Network Fund – tackling child poverty in Sheffield

Monday, January 21, 2002

Meg Munn, Labour MP has today welcomed the announcement that Sheffield Heeley is to benefit from a share in £70million of government money.

The Local Network Fund, launched last year by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Gordon Brown, is intended to support local community groups to tackle poverty and disadvantage among children and young people up to 18 years of age. Its aim is to help children in poverty achieve their potential by investing directly in the work of local community and voluntary groups that provide local solutions to the question of child poverty.

This fund will be distributed directly to local community groups in three phases over the next three years and by April 2003 the network will cover the whole of England.

Meg Munn said “Gordon Brown launched a real crusade against child poverty and I am delighted that Sheffield Heeley is within one of the thirty four areas in England to receive money from this special fund from 1 April 2002.

“£700 thousand is being given within South Yorkshire and I urge local groups who want to apply for a grant of between £250 and £7000 to contact the Local Network Call Centre on 0845 1130161 for information and an application pack. There is also a website at www.cypu.gov.uk
