Be vigilant over furniture safety

Friday, August 24, 2007

Whilst visiting the Castle Market Co-operative department store in Sheffield city centre, Heeley MP Meg Munn gives her support to the All-Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group in raising awareness of the required safety standards for furniture sold in the UK.

The UK Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 require a label to be attached to all new domestic furniture sold in the UK. The label should indicate that the furniture fabric has passed the Cigarette test AND the Match Test - the fillings are also compliant.

However in recent months many large national stores have been seen selling furniture with incorrect and illegal labels. These labels only indicate that the furniture has passed the Cigarette test.

Meg said:

“I urge everyone to keep an eye out for illegally labelled furniture. It is very important that furniture suppliers enforce the UK’s strict regulations to ensure public safety. Trading Standards welcome assistance from the public in highlighting cases where unsafe furniture is sold, anyone with concerns should contact them straightaway.”

It was reported in June 2000 that from 1988 to 1997 the Regulations have saved at least 710 lives and prevented at least 5,770 injuries. Recent figures from the Department for Communities and Local Government show that the downward trend in deaths and injuries has continued.
