Meeting the new Jamaican Prime Minister

Monday, September 10, 2007

While on a Ministerial visit to Jamaica Meg met the Prime Minister-designate, Bruce Golding, who will be sworn in at a ceremony on 11th September 2007. Mr Golding leads the Jamaica Labour Party who were successful in the recent General Election - winning 33 seats to the People’s National Party’s 27.

The incoming Prime Minister and Meg had a good discussion about issues of common concern; Mr Golding indicated he wanted to increase the level of co-operation between the UK and Jamaica. Some of the issues discussed were concerns about crime and drug trafficking, Jamaican nationals who are in the UK and UK nationals in Jamaica.

During her stay Meg also met the new Foreign Affairs Minister, who is also General Secretary of the Jamaica Labour Party, the outgoing Security Minister as well as the new incoming Security Minister. The Jamaica Gleaner newspaper hosted a lunch where Meg met people from the business world and civil society. In the evening a reception in her honour was held at the High Commission with politicians, other Ambassadors, civil servants and members of Jamaican society attending.
