Holding discussions with PM Helen Clark

Friday, October 19, 2007

Meg met with Helen Clark, the New Zealand Prime Minister following the end of the Pacific Island Forum. They discussed the outcome of the Forum, which New Zealand attends as a participant. The Prime Minister felt that progress had been made about situation in Fiji, where a military coup had taken place, where the Forum is urging a planned return to democracy as soon as possible. She felt that the Forum is developing into a regional organisation that is able to tackle difficult issues in its own area.

We also discussed Burma, following up a discussion Helen Clark had with Prime Minister Gordon Brown 10 days ago in London. New Zealand is supportive of the UN work in Burma in seeking to find a process that can lead to discussions between the regime and democracy campaigners. I advised her of recent EU decisions imposing further targeted measures on the regime, particularly on the export of gems, precious metals and teak.
