Meg meets the Sheffield Burmese ‘Karen’ community

Tuesday, October 30, 2007

Heeley MP and Foreign Office Minister Meg Munn met members of the Karen community currently living in Sheffield. The Karen are a distinct Burmese ethnic community. The Karen community have been given sanctuary in Sheffield as part of the Home Office’s ‘Gateway’ programme.

Meg has Ministerial responsibility for Burma and has recently returned from a visit from the region. She was keen to meet members of the local Karen community to hear first hand about what life has been under the brutal military regime in Burma. She also wanted to offer reassurance that the UK government is doing all it can to help bring forward democracy to the country.

Meg said:

‘I was delighted to meet members of the Karen community - but disturbed by their stories of what they had experienced in their home country.

The violent and repressive regime in Burma has to realise that the world will not ignore how it treats the Burmese population. During my recent visit to the region I had a number of meetings with Ministers from surrounding countries about the situation in Burma. I made it clear that a collective response from its neighbours is needed, that they must continue to apply pressure on the Burmese regime.

The UK government and its allies, working with the UN and the ASEAN group of countries will work hard to bring democracy to the country.’

The Karen community and its supporters hold regular solidarity protests across the country it takes place in Sheffield in the Peace Gardens.
