Meeting Singaporean MPs

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Whilst in Singapore on a Ministerial visit Meg met with two Members of the Singapore Parliament, Irene Ng Phek Hoong and Michael Palmer. Together with the British High Commissioner they discussed the current situation in Burma, the Singaporean MPs having raised this issue in their Parliament. Irene Ng Phek Hoong had recently met Burmese people living in Singapore and received a petition from them about events in their home country.

The group also discussed the importance Singapore attaches to community cohesion, including promoting personal and community contact between the different ethnic groups that comprise the island. Singapore has a system of quotas for ethnic groups in housing allocation, along with group representative constituencies for Parliament where parties have to include candidates from the different ethnic groups.

Irene Ng Phek Hoong has been an MP since 2001 and is Deputy Chair, Government Parliamentary Committee for Defence and Foreign Affairs. She is also the chief editor of the National Trades Union Congress magazine.  Michael Palmer was elected in 2006 and worked as a lawyer.
