Meg Munn and the new Sheffield tartan

Friday, August 16, 2002

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative Party MP for Sheffield Heeley was delighted to have been invited to a very special event yesterday with the City of Sheffield Pipe Band.

The band was established in 1908 as the Sheffield Pipe Band and with the addition of ‘City’ to its title in 1991 has continued to the present day as the official pipe band to represent Sheffield.

Last night in Norton Church Hall, during an evening of music and highland dancing, the City of Sheffield Pipe Band revealed the "City of Sheffield" tartan for the first time.

Keith Foulds, President of the Sheffield Pipe Band explains

"There are very few cities throughout the world which can truly claim to have their own tartan. Ours will be registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority this year as "The City of Sheffield". We are proud of Sheffield and hope that the introduction of the City’s own tartan which the band members will wear when fully financed, may introduce the City and its band to many more people throughout the world."

The colours in the tartan tell its own story. The grey base denotes the steel industry, green and blue the city colours, the red stripe the heat of hot steel and the black stripe the association with the coal industry.

Meg said "I was honoured to be presented with a piece of new tartan and I wish the band well in raising funds so that they can all proudly wear our city’s colours at future events."
