Sheffield launches children’s strategy

Friday, February 15, 2008

Heeley MP Meg Munn attended the launch of a new strategy to encourage participation by, and consultation of, young people in the city. It is being led by the ‘Sheffield 0-19 Partnership’ and the Sheffield Youth Council and aim’s to engage young people in decision making processes to influence the services they receive.

Meg said of the launch:

“It is important that young people have a platform from which they can air their views. I know from the schools in my constituency that young people can have strong and thoughtful opinions on a variety of issues. I welcome the launch of this strategy and I look forward to further engaging with young people in the future.”

The strategy was born out of the influential Every Child Matters paper and the Children’s Act 2006 which was the first piece of legislation directed solely at children. The strategy envisions that by 2010 children and young people in Sheffield will:

  • have a voice in the way services are planned, delivered and evaluated,
  • be seen as individuals, have their diversity acknowledged, and listened to and treated with respect,
  • have access to high quality services,
  • be supported as they progress through birth to adulthood, and
  • have a voice in their community, neighbourhood, the political structures and services delivery.
