Prospects for change in Burma

Saturday, March 1, 2008

At a dinner focused on the situation in Burma and prospects for change, guests were optimistic that change will come but may take some time. Concern was expressed about the number of Burmese refugees around 140,000 - who live in refugee camps in Thailand. Some of these people are now second generation, with very few having received education beyond the age of 10. There are real problems about the quality of life, and in the longer term the loss of Burmese language skills and culture.

Guests included - Mr. Aung Zaw, a Burmese journalist based in Thailand, M. R. Disnadda Diskul from a development project, Mr. Jack Dunford, Director of the Thailand Burma Border Consortium who works with the refugees, Mr. Charavit Santaputra, Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Mr. Kasit Piromya, Thai Opposition spokesperson on Foreign Affairs.
