Targeting Sex Offenders

Sunday, May 4, 2008

At a press conference held at the end of her visit to the Philippines Meg Munn, Britain’s Foreign Office Minister for South-East Asia and the Pacific revealed that the two countries are looking into the possibility of creating an extradition treaty to target sex offenders. Munn met Social Welfare Secretary, Esperanza Cabral, to discuss starting negotiations on the treaty, as part of her visit to the Philippines for meetings with officials on various bilateral issues. She said the treaty would target British paedophiles and other sex offenders in the Philippines.

She said she was encouraged by her initial talks on the issue, and remarked:

“Putting in place an extradition treaty would make the process of sending sex offenders back to Britain simpler. There is cooperation between the UK and the Philippines in identifying the situation.”

Reports suggest British men are allegedly among the main perpetrators of child prostitution in the Philippines. The Philippines has extradition treaties with the United States, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, Micronesia, Spain, Switzerland, India and China.
