Launching the Amanah project

Saturday, May 3, 2008

During her visit to the Philippines Meg launched the Amanah project, an initiative designed to develop an Islamic leadership framework for the Philippines, which if successful will be initiated in other countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia. The project is designed to foster cross-cultural openness and understanding and enhance skills in peaceful conflict resolution. It will be implemented by the Asian Institute of Management and run for two years.

At the launch Meg Munn said:

“The United Kingdom is proud to be a partner with the Asian Institute of Management in launching this important initiative. The project will complement our other work with Islamic communities here in the Philippines, such as our support for empowering the Ulama, Muslim interns in business, training for Local Government Poverty Reduction Teams in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and None-Governmental Organisation peace projects in Mindanao."

"The UK has a significant minority Muslim population. They are an important part of the UK’s society, and an important part of society here in the Philippines. The role of Muslim leaders is crucial in ensuring that the Muslim community realises its full potential. We hope the project will give Muslim leaders effective tools to work more effectively for the good of the communities they represent and for the Philippines as a whole."

The project provides leadership programmes for political, military, business and religious leaders coming from Muslim communities. The project will develop leadership programmes through partner academic and Islamic institutions. The development of leadership within Muslim communities overseas complements the work that is being done in the UK. The project is funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as part of its Counter Terrorism and Radicalisation Programme.
