Sheffield’s Malaysian connection

Tuesday, June 17, 2008

On a recent Ministerial visit to Malaysia Heeley MP Meg Munn met with the Principal of Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC), Ms Yoong Lai Thye. The college, based in Kuala Lumpur, is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its relationship with Sheffield Hallam University. Each summer hundreds of Malaysian students come to Sheffield to complete their degrees, giving them the overseas experience that is highly thought of in Malaysia.

This summer a further 600 TARC undergraduate and postgraduate students will come to Sheffield for a three-month term to finish their degrees. This will bring the number of Malaysian students who have studied at Sheffield Hallam to well over 4,500. The students mainly study business, accounting and finance, engineering and construction.

Meg commented:

“I spoke to John Palmer, Director of Communications at Sheffield Hallam University, before I visited Malaysia, he told me about Hallam’s strong ties with the country. I was able to meet representatives from Tunku Abdul Rahman College on my visit and learn more about the scheme.

It is a fantastic arrangement which provides students with international experience. The links made can only be good for both educational establishments, and both countries. I enjoyed meeting Yoong Lai Thye and I look forward to meeting some of the Malaysian students when they visit later this year.”
