Learning about epilepsy

Friday, August 15, 2008

Sheffield Heeley MP Meg Munn recently met with members from Epilepsy Sheffield. She heard a presentation from Michaela Miller, Policy Officer of Epilepsy Sheffield, in which she outlined the key findings of a report published by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Epilepsy. Local epilepsy sufferers and professionals working with local people then explained the difficulties they face.

They spoke about the poor knowledge of epilepsy, including by local GPs. They praised the value of the epilepsy nursing service, but expressed concern that the service currently has vacancies.  A particular worry is about people with learning disabilities who also have epilepsy, who they feel are not getting the service they should.

Meg said she would write to Sheffield Primary Care Trust asking for more provision for the treatment of epilepsy. She also agreed to write to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals about the grading of specialist nurses for epilepsy.
