Visiting a Madrasah school
Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Whilst in Singapore on a Ministerial visit Meg visited the Madrasah Al-Irsyad Al-Islamiah School. This is a full-time co-educational Madrasah offering both primary and secondary school education and has been in operation for around 60 years. It is under the management of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, a statutory board in charge of handling Muslim affairs.
Madrasah is an Arabic word meaning "school", but here means an Islamic religious school. There are six Madrasah schools in total in Singapore, offering both religious studies and secular subjects with students taking exams in both. Some of its graduates move on to further their studies in Islamic Universities overseas and return to become religious teachers, while others go to the local polytechnics and universities and became professionals in a wide range of occupations.
