Meg attends Pacific Islands Forum

Sunday, August 24, 2008

Foreign Office Minister Meg Munn visited Niue for this year’s Pacific Islands Forum, the annual gathering of the 14 leaders of Pacific island countries, Australia and New Zealand.

Pacific leaders were joined by other countries to take part in discussion following the Forum, including the European Union, the USA, China, Japan, South Korea and India. The themes of this year’s forum were climate change, energy and food security, and fisheries management.

Meg said:

“Pacific island states are particularly vulnerable to global problems, such as the rising cost of fuel and food, and the effects of climate change. The prospect of rising sea levels already threatens the existence of some countries. Today’s meeting was a valuable opportunity to discuss these issues with Pacific leaders, and to explore solutions. I also welcomed the Pacific Islands Forum’s strong leadership in urging their neighbour, Fiji, to take concrete steps to return to democracy”.
