Meg welcomes cancer vaccination programme

Monday, September 15, 2008

Heeley MP Meg Munn welcomes the introduction this autumn of the Human Papillomavirus Vaccination (HPV) programme. It will be introduced for girls aged 12-13 years (school year 8), and a catch up programme for girls aged 17-18 will also be rolled out.  The HPV vaccination will help to protect a generation of women against cervical cancer.

Meg said:

“The government has invested more than ever before in cancer services - approximately 4.35 billion was spent on cancer services in 2006/07. The earlier a cancer is detected, the better the chance of curing it which is the HPV programme is a valuable advance in preventing cervical cancer. It is a debilitating disease that affects hundreds of women each year. The vaccine will save lives and I encourage all those which are offered it to take it.”

The vaccine protects against two strains of HPV which cause over 70% of cases of cervical cancer. There are three doses of the vaccine needed over about a 6-month period.
