Co-operative Party discussions

Thursday, September 18, 2008

As a Co-operative Party member Meg recently attended the annual conference of the Party to take part in the debate and discussions about future policy. . The conference, held in the Methodist Hall, London, had a packed agenda covering many topics concerning people today including the economy, climate change etc. In addition, discussions covered items of special interest to the co-operative movement.

Meg participated in a debate on ‘citizen and consumer rights’, specifically on the issue of equality. She called on Co-operative Party members not just to demand improved legislation, but to use the legislation that is already in place. The Government requires all public services to promote equality between people of different races, between men and women and for disabled and able bodied people. Meg said that local Co-operative Parties are well placed to ask local organisations, such as councils and health organisations, what they are doing to make equality a reality.
