For a Safer Tomorrow

Monday, September 29, 2008

Oxfam invited Meg to join their panel at a public meeting in Manchester to help launch their new publication ‘For a Safer Tomorrow’. Meg was joined by Edmund Cairns, Oxfam’s Senior Policy Adviser and Richard Howitt MEP, Vice Chair of the EU’s Human Rights Sub-Committee. The meeting was chaired by Alice Hutchinson from Amnesty International UK.

This new publication explains that sixty years after the main Geneva Conventions enshrined civilians’ rights to protection; they are violated in every current conflict. It goes on to outline various ways where governments can make a difference in protecting civilians. It argues that they have an interest in doing so, because mass atrocities fuel the conflicts that, in an interdependent world, create security threats that cannot be contained. That governments have a ‘moral interest’ too, because their electorates expect them to help prevent, not just condemn, the atrocities they see beamed around the world through modern information technology.
