Supporting Shop Workers

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Heeley MP Meg Munn called on shoppers to “keep your cool at Christmas” and not take out seasonal frustrations on shop workers. She visited the Co-operative store at Newfield Green to meet members of staff and support the retail trade union Usdaw’s “keep your cool at Christmas” campaign. The campaign aims to cut down on the abuse and assaults suffered by shop staff during the Christmas shopping period.

Meg said:

“Usdaw’s most recent survey shows that two thirds of shop staff have been abused in the past year. A major cause is angry customers and reports of ‘trolley rage’ incidents are on the increase.  The shop staff that I met told me that Christmas is the time when they suffer most anger and abuse.

“I urge shoppers not to take out their frustration on shop staff who have to work long hours when shops are at their busiest. Verbal abuse and threats are anti-social behaviour and I encourage retailers and police in Sheffield to work together to reduce such incidents.”

John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary said:

“Shop workers in Sheffield are pleased to have the support of Meg for their campaign.  Too many customers seem to forget that shop staff have feelings, and treat them without any respect.

“Christmas can be a very stressful time, but we are calling on all customers to think twice before they abuse staff. By staying calm they will help retailers give them a better service.  Hopefully, with the support of Meg, shoppers and staff in Sheffield can all enjoy Christmas shopping.”
