Promoting equality in Parliaments

Tuesday, January 20, 2009

Meg Munn led a workshop on ‘Promoting equality at Parliament and Government’ for African women politicians. The workshop examined in detail how measures such as all women shortlists have increased the number of women in Westminster; the skills need to be an effective campaigner and how in Government equality can be promoted. The two day training event was funded by the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, of which Meg is Chair.

The participants came from Ghana, Botswana and Cameroon. They shared some of the difficulties they face, including the cost of elections, corruption and the unwillingness of men and women to vote for women candidates. Ideas on how to campaign to change matters were shared by the participants.

The sessions were based on the Protocol to the African Charter on Human Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa (known as the Africa Women’s Protocol). This Protocol commits the signatory states to adopt all measures necessary for women to enjoy their rights, and to provide budgetary and other resources for the full and effective implementation of the rights contained in the Protocol. It is an African initiative and to date it has been signed in 23 of the 53 states of Africa
