Helping Sheffield Charities

SPREADING IN KIND DIRECT’S MESSAGE TO HELP SHEFFIELD CHARITIES

When Meg Munn sent information about In Kind Direct to voluntary organisations in her constituency last month, the charity was delighted at the response.

"We had our first call from a Sheffield charity the next day," says In Kind Direct’s chief executive Robin Boles. "And enquiries are still coming in. It’s been great to have Meg’s support and enthusiasm for our work and, of course, her local knowledge. Otherwise reaching all the organisations in the area which might benefit from In Kind Direct’s service would have been much more difficult."

"Making ends meet is a constant challenge for charities," she says. "In Kind Direct can help stretch their budgets much further making it possible for them to obtain everyday essentials at savings of up to 90%. This leaves them more to spend on their core activities. Every day more goods reach our warehouse and so we have the capacity to help hundreds more charities and community groups."

In Kind Direct is the charities’ charity, founded by The Prince of Wales in 1996 to encourage companies to donate their surplus goods for redistribution to the voluntary sector. Over the past five and a half years 475 companies have donated £24 million worth of supplies and equipment and almost 2,500 charities have been able to obtain their everyday essentials - saucepans, computers, clothing and footwear, cleaning products, toiletries, office supplies and equipment, toys and games, sports kit and household appliances, saucepans and power tools - generally for five to ten per cent of their retail value.

Meg Munn, Labour and Co-operative MP for Sheffield Heeley, commenting on the high interest levels amongst local charities and community groups in Sheffield, said

"In Kind is a marvellous charity, I am not at all surprised that local groups have been excited by hearing about them. When you read that they have persuaded the Early Learning Centre to donate toys to children"s charities, or that Black and Decker give new equipment to accomodation-based charities, for instance, you realise just how much of a difference they can make. I would urge any local charities who are intersted in learning more about what the charities" charity can do for them, to get in touch with In Kind now."

UK voluntary organisations working at home and abroad in In Kind Direct’s network receive a monthly catalogue of goods available from which they can select items and pay a nominal handling charge, which includes delivery. There are a number of first-year registration subsidies with discount vouchers available to organisations in certain parts of the country or working in particular focus areas.
