Talent Day for Paralympics

Friday, February 6, 2009

Heeley MP Meg Munn attended the ParalympicsGB Talent Day at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield. More than 60 people with disabilities came to be tested in 12 of the 20 Paralympic summer sports.

Those attending ranged in age from 11 to 43 and were from a range of disability groups including those with visual impairments, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, amputations and spinal cord injuries. Although many came from Yorkshire there were also people who had travelled across the country to attend.

More than 50% of those who attended had been screened as having Paralympic potential in at least one of the sports. Those chosen to go further will be put in touch with the national governing body and linked to coaches and clubs with which they can train.

Meg said of the event:

‘It was a fantastic showcase for the English Institute of Sport.  The facility allowed potential sports men and women to try new sports such as fencing and archery both of which I enjoyed trying myself.

It also was a showcase to anyone that technology and specially adapted equipment now allows people with disabilities to compete in a wide range of sports. Events like this outside London should continue and ensure the benefits of hosting the Games in 3 years time are felt all across the country.’
