Going Bananas for Fairtrade

Friday, March 6, 2009

Heeley MP Meg Munn joined thousands of others across the country in ‘Going Bananas for Fairtrade’ by eating a Fairtrade banana between noon on the 6th and noon on 7th March as part of the world’s biggest banana-eating event. This nationwide happening was part of Fairtrade Fortnight two weeks of events, happenings and meetings to promote and extend fair-trade with farmers and workers in the developing world.

The UK is one of the world’s leading Fairtrade markets, with more products and more awareness of Fairtrade than anywhere else. The UK market is doubling in value every 2 years, and in 2007 reached an estimated retail value of 493 million. Around 20% of roast and ground coffee, and 20% of bananas sold in the UK are now Fairtrade.

Meg said:

“During this global economic downturn, it is vital that the farmers and workers in the developing world do not suffer. By buying food from these developing countries on terms that are fair to both producer and consumer we help their economies to grow and reduce poverty.

Already the UK’s demand for African fruit and vegetables benefits a million farmers and their families. When consumers and retailers act together to promote and buy goods from developing countries, we make a difference to the lives of some of the world’s poorest people.”
